Born on August 11th, 1981, Ginny Molly Weasley is the seventh child of Molly and Arthur Weasley. The only girl born into this family for several generations, young Ginny is Ron's youngest sister and has six older brothers but doesn't let herself get pushed around.
Compared to the other characters in the series we don't often recognize Ginny - portrayed by actress Bonnie Wright in the films - as a fully fleshed out character. Starting with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, the innocent vivid redhead becomes apart of the Weasley and Potter clan at Hogwarts hanging out in the background as a friend.
Ginny most famously becomes apart of the storytelling against Voldemort in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Inadvertently coming into possession of Tom Riddle's diary, poor young Ginny becomes ill as she writes in the diary expressing her feelings towards Harry. At Hogwarts, a series of unfortunate attacks have petrified several students and staff. The mysterious chamber of secrets has been opened with the heir of Slytherin making his/her return. It is not until the climatic ending of the book is it revealed that Ginny was actually possessed by Tom Riddle!
Ginny Weasley - Ron’s younger sister, and formerly Harry’s girlfriend. Ginny is a member of Dumbledore’s Army and has proven herself a tough and resilient ally even before getting together with Harry. Harry broke up with Ginny when he realized that no one would be safe with him as long as Voldemort is alive.
Throughout the rest of the series, until she becomes a stronger love interest to Harry Potter, she is not directly involved in the main plots. Throughout Prisoner of Azkaban and The Goblet of Fire, much like in the books and the films, Ginny is seen in passing either sitting with the Golden Trio of Harry, Ron and Hermione or interacting with other characters.
In Order of the Phoenix, when Harry is banned from playing Quidditch Ginny replaces him as Seeker. She joins Dumbledore's Army ready to fight against the Dark Lord and tries to help the others rescue Sirius Black at the Ministry of Magic. She also feverently reminds Harry that he is more than a pawn in Lord Voldemort's reign for power, retelling him of her experience with possession.
By Half Blood Prince rolls around, she is much more used in the romance subplots. However still fighting alongside her friends against Dementors and becoming a Chaser for Gryffindor, she puts a fight until the very end - even in Deathly Hallows with the Battle of Hogwarts.
Ginny - full name Ginerva - is often debated amongst us fans for the lack of development with Ginny. We lack to see her motivations behind her attraction with Harry. Our first impression of Ginny from Book 2 is that she is a Damsel in Distress. Bubbly, witty, and strong-willed, Ginny also has a bit of temper and forceful personality. She fell in love with the hero image of The Chosen One before she fell in love with the actual boy Harry. We often forget about her in the books and films that she can quite handle herself quite well - even if she isn't deeply explored in the series.
"Yeah, size is no guarantee of power," said George. "Look at Ginny."
"What d' you mean?" said Harry.
You've never been on the receiving end of one of her Bat-Bogey Hexes, have you?" (Order of the Phoenix)
"Yeah, the D.A.'s good. Only let's make it stand for Dumbledore's Army because that's the Ministry's worst fear, isn't it?" - Ginny (Order of the Phoenix)
"But you've been too busy saving the Wizarding world. Well ... I can't say I'm surprised. I knew this would happen in the end. I knew you wouldn't be happy unless you were hunting Voldemort. Maybe that's why I like you so much." - Ginny Weasley (Half Blood Prince)
"The thing about growing up with Fred and George is that you sort of start thinking anything's possible if you've got enough nerve." - Ginny (Order of the Phoenix)
