Would Alternative Titles Changed the Harry Potter Phenomenon

We're always told to never judge a book by its cover. Inevitably, however, when we walk through a bookstore or are perusing our library bookshelves, the first characteristics that might inspire us to pick up a book is the title or the book cover. These first visual contacts are what initially attract us to read a summary and scan through the pages, eventually to our reading a novel or series.

All readers have done this dance where books have won or lost our interest. With Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's, and the rest of the series, I can't help but wonder what made it catch on so quickly. We can be fast to answer it was JK Rowling's writing (brilliant) and the story itself (superb), but somehow the right words fit the title so well the series caught on like wildfire. What if the Harry Potter series only started with The Letter, The Wizarding School, and The Sorcerer's Stone (a la The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis)? Or how about just The Dursleys on Privet Drive, The Boy Who Lived, or The Boy With the Lightning Scar?

With the same captivating story but a slightly altered title, would the Harry Potter phenomenon taken place? If we all had time turners, it sure would be interesting to find out - though I would dare think that we would not wish to take the risk for this series to never take off like it did. Instead, I played around with the titles so see if there are alternatives that sound just as good.

  1. Nice write-up! Being able to write creatively is something not all of us are capable of. Count yourself blessed because you have a talent. Getting into the mood in writing does not have a set of rules to follow. ‘To each his own’ is what people say; however, a list of suggestions wouldn’t hurt.writing fiction
