In the wizarding world, and now Muggle world, chocolate frogs are a popular snack Harry Potter and his friends enjoyed throughout their years at Hogwarts. What was merely a treat on the page and the big screen came to life when Universal Studios made chocolate frogs available to guests at their theme parks and online.
Each chocolate frog includes gold and purple packaging similar to the ones seen in the films, a card of a famous witch or wizard, and an edible chocolate frog.
So far, the collection of available cards includes the Hogwarts house founders Godric Gryffindor, Rowena Ravenclaw, Helga Hufflepuff, and Salazar Slytherin, and Dumbledore.
Obviously, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to snag one. Who else could make a chocolate frog card more charming than Gilderoy's flamboyant poise and smile? He was, after all, a five-time winner of Witch Weekly's Most Charming Smile Award.
The front of the card is a lenticular design, which gives off a definition that Lockhart is in 3D. The back of the card is normal plain text and colors.
Sir Kenneth Branagh, who played Lockhart in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, is pictured on the front of the card. He is the only other actor from the film franchise to be featured in the chocolate frog series so far - the other honor goes to Michael Gambon who played Dumbledore. The individuals posing for the house founders' cards are featured in the queue for Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey theme park attraction at Universal Orlando Islands of Adventure.
Wizarding celebrity author, Gilderoy Lockhart, wrote many books on his encounters with dark creatures and received many prestigous awards including Order of Merlin, Third Class and Honorary Member of the Dark Force Defense League. After losing his memory in a series of unfortunate events, he released his final book entitled Who Am I?His chocolate frog is certainly a commemorative one for witches and wizards who are fans of his work.
It's fun to note that the details about his memory loss are not included on the back of the card, merely referred to as "a series of unfortunate events". Harry Potter fans know that the books reveal that Lockhart's crimes of plagiarizing witches and wizards' tales after performing memory charms was never revealed to the wizarding public. Dumbledore felt he got what he deserved and that Lockhart shouldn't receive further backlash for memories he doesn't remember. Lockhart began receiving treatment St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries still ready to sign autographs for adoring fans.
As mentioned above, the chocolate frogs are purchased at random - so there's no telling which card you may get. But you never know! I've had the luck of the draw and managed to snag all four Hogwarts house founders on the first try. I'm still looking for Dumbledore. Each card really is a must-have for Harry Potter fans looking to expand their memorabilia collection!
