Where Are They Now: Rupert Grint

Where Are They Now Rupert Grint

Born in Harlow, Essex, England, England on August 24th 1988, Rupert Grint was the oldest of his family's sibilings, and had at a young age performed in plays at his school and local theater group. His roles to date were Peter Pan and Rapelestiltskin.

At 11 years old, Grint discovered a casting for a soon-to-be worldwide phenomenon in film Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. A fan of the series, the young ginger began immediately trying different tactics to score the role of the Harry's best friend, Ron Weasley. After seeing a newsreel about the auditions, Grint sent in a videotape of himself dressed up as his drama teacher, rapping why he'd like to be cast.

The courage to stand out from other auditioners earned Grint a meeting with the casting team and several prior auditions for the role. Soon enough the official cast announcement was made in August 2000. Grint appeared alongside two of the other luckiest unknown soon-to-be-megastars Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe, who were cast as Hermione Granger and Harry Potter respectively.

Throughout the series, the image of Ron began to change gradually from the book series. Between the pages Ron was a bit more outspoken and defensive towards those who attacked his friends especially future love interest Hermione Granger...while in the film series his character became known as the comic relief.

First impressions are not everything though. Examining more closely at the performance given by Rupert Grint, you can see a character who is loyal to his friends - sometimes belligerently, but loyal nonetheless. It could be said much more so than any other character featured in the series, Weasley goes through the maturity stages that all young teenagers reach.

From best friend in Sorcerer's Stone, jealous and envy in Goblet of Fire, to loyal teammate once more by Half Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows, Grint ten year performance gave the laidback, supportive friend we all imagined in the books. He was critically praised throughout the series for his subtle abilities to give Ron both wit and subtle angst.

As the series charged forward through its eight film trek, Grint broke out of his role as Ron Weasley in other films such as Thunderpants, Driving Lessons, and Cherrybomb. When the series finally wrapped in the summer of 2011, Grint continued working in film and broke out in theater.
