The Harry Potter movies offer us a unique and captivating visual journey into our beloved wizarding world, making them an integral part of the Potterhead experience. But have you ever considered the total Harry Potter running time, and if it’s feasible to watch them all in a single day?
With all eight Harry Potter films now officially released on DVD and streaming platforms, the thought of a 24-hour Harry Potter movie marathon challenge is quite tempting. The question remains: How long are the Harry Potter movies, and is it feasible to watch them all in a single day? We’ve crunched the numbers to find out.
Understanding the Harry Potter Running Time: A Film-by-Film Breakdown
To determine if a 24-hour marathon was feasible, we calculated the lengths of each film’s standard theatrical version.
Please note: We did not take times from Google, as results vary from theatrical to extended versions.
- Sorcerer’s Stone = 152 minutes = 2 hours 32 minutes
- Chamber of Secrets = 161 minutes = 2 hours 41 minutes
- Prisoner of Azkaban = 142 minutes = 2 hours 22 minutes
- Goblet of Fire = 157 minutes = 2 hours 37 minutes
- Order of the Phoenix = 139 minutes = 2 hours 18 minutes
- Half Blood Prince = 153 minutes = 2 hours 33 minutes
- Deathly Hallows pt 1 = 146 minutes = 2 hours 26 minutes
- Deathly Hallows pt 2 = 130 minutes = 2 hours 10 minutes
This adds up to a whopping 1180 minutes, or 19 hours and 40 minutes. Considering there are 1440 minutes in a day, it seems quite possible!
Rules of the Harry Potter Marathon
You could begin your marathon at 4:00 AM and finish at 11:40 PM. A lengthy but truly enchanting experience! For the marathon to be authentic, we suggest minimal breaks between movies and no fast-forwarding, even through your least favorite scenes.
Need to save time? Skip the 8 to 14 minute end credits of each movie to shave off an additional 1 hour and 30 minutes. This time can be utilized for short breaks to stretch, refill snacks, or even for a quick restroom break.
What About Fantastic Beasts?
Should you wish to include the Fantastic Beasts series, be mindful of the added time. The first film, Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, adds an extra 2 hours and 13 minutes to your total run time. Including the Fantastic Beasts sequel will convert your one-day Harry Potter marathon into a two-day cinematic experience.
Calculating Extended Version Run Times
Interested in the extended versions? Keep in mind that these include deleted scenes and will result in longer run times. The exact additional time can vary, but be prepared to add around 30 minutes per movie to your marathon.
Armed with the knowledge of Harry Potter movie lengths, how long to watch all Harry Potter movies, and tips for a successful marathon, we say good luck or rather, brew some Felix Felicis!
